More college mail... and more... and more...

By this point in your high school senior's college search, you are probably getting pretty tired of the stacks of envelopes, glossy brochures and post cards arriving to your home on a daily basis. If your son or daughter has been accepted to Kettering, however, I ask that you begin to pay attention to the Kettering envelopes, as they contain important information about scholarships and financial aid, academics and the co-op job search process.

Over the next few months the Kettering admissions officers and cooperative education managers are available to assist you and your prospective Kettering student with the next steps toward enrollment. I guarantee that this process will create a paper trail...you might want to start a file folder!

May your child come out from under the tremendous stacks of "unknown" college mail and open the envelopes from Kettering University!

As always, please call our office at 800-955-4464, ext 7865 if you have questions.

What is A-Section, what is B-Section?

If you have spent any time researching Kettering University, you probably learned that the paid cooperative education program is one of Kettering's unique features. Every new student, with the help of his or her Kettering co-op manager, will work to secure a paid learning experience with a company. In the coming months, your student will receive more information about this process.

Another element that makes Kettering different from most universities is our academic calendar. Functioning as a year-round system, Kettering has 4 terms of 12 weeks each.  Terms begin in July, October, January and April.  Students switch between their course terms and co-op terms every 12 weeks. Student are assigned to either A-Section or B-Section, meaning that their classes will begin in either the July or October term.

A-Section
July term: start classes at Kettering
October term: co-op experience
January term: classes at Kettering
April term: co-op experience

B-Section
October term: start classes at Kettering
January term: co-op experience
April term: classes at Kettering
July term: co-op experience

(Last year some new B-Section freshmen started at their co-op jobs in July, depending on job location and availability  -- even before they started their classes in October!)

This calendar system is a new concept for many prospective students.  Kettering students will tell you that they get used to moving every 3 months!

Students learn their section assignments at the time of acceptance to Kettering. If students wish to switch sections, they may simply send an email to sectionassignments@kettering.edu.

As always, call us at 1-800-955-4464 ext. 7865 with your questions.

Deadlines, Timelines, What's Next? Glad you asked.

Hello, Parents and Guardians of our Kettering applicants!  Here are just a few items to which I'd like to draw your attention:

1. Our first round of admission letters will be sent in mid-November.  Students who have completed their applications by submitting transcripts and test scores should hear from us around that time. Kettering practices rolling admissions which means that we have no application or admission deadlines.  We will work with your students on application completion throughout the fall, winter and spring months!  If you know others who plan to apply, please encourage them to do so.

2. Many opportunities exist to visit Kettering!  If your family would like to visit our campus, please log onto www.admissions.kettering.edu/visit to schedule your personalized visit!  You can also check out Discover Kettering, our big open house coming up on Saturday, November 12th.  Information for this event can be found on the same web link.

Later, in winter and spring, we will have some campus visit dates especially tailored to accepted students.  Watch this blog and the Kettering web site for news on those days as well.

3. What will it cost your student to attend Kettering?  We always urge students/parents to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, after January 1.  For an early estimate of what an education at Kettering might cost, however, I encourage you to take a look at our Net Price Calculator.  Follow the instructions at  http://www.kettering.edu/futurestudents/finaidcalculator/

Students who qualify for our academic or "merit" scholarhips do not need to file special paperwork. We will notify qualified students about their scholarships shortly after they are admitted to Kettering.  Check out more information on special scholarships at http://admissions.kettering.edu/money/scholarships.cfm.

Have you seen the interview of James McClaren, one of our students, about his academic experiences and co-op job?  This is a wonderful example of the kind of academic preparation that puts Kettering students ahead of their peers.  Click on the short link below to watch the interview.

We want to hear from you

It may be helpful for you to know this regarding your student's application process to Kettering:

We try to make this process as personable as possible, for example, by assigning one of our admissions counselors to every applicant. Your student's counselor is available to answer questions, explain next steps, and to educate you on "all things Kettering".

It is our goal to maintain close contact with every applicant via whatever method works best -- home phone, cell phone, e-mail, Facebook, visits, letters, notes, carrier pigeon-- tell me what works best for your family!

If you don't yet know the name of your student's Kettering admissions person, please let me know. I will be happy to connect you! The staff is spending a good deal of time traveling around the country recruiting during the fall months, but they do check messages and respond to voice mails and e-mail.

(For your information, Kettering will begin to send decision letters in mid-November to students whose files are already complete.)

Kettering practices "rolling" admissions, meaning that we do not maintain application deadlines. Students may apply throughout senior year of high school!

If you ever experience difficulty reaching anyone in the Office of Admissions, remember that I am only a phone call or an email away as well!

Best of success to your future math, science, engineering, or business student! (Or how about pre-med?)

Announcing Kettering University's seventh President!

Another recruitment season is underway, so I've decided it's time to dust off the blogging site that I started last year, and gather together some good information that will be helpful and timely to an important population:  parents of prospective Kettering students!

Kettering University is off to a great year under the leadership of our new president, Bob McMahan. Take a look at what Kettering's chairman of the board says about the president:

"Bob McMahan is an innovative thinker with a broad range of academic, business, management, fund-raising and government experiences that make him an ideal selection to be Kettering's next president.  We are particularly excited about his proven abilities to engage traditional academics with science and technology-based economic development and his ability to work closely with faculty, staff and students to achieve Kettering's goals. His contributions will help our University continue its great legacy."

Welcome, President McMahan!

Test your Diamond's Validity using Laser Spectroscopy!

The following was taken from the My Kettering web page:

Dr. Bahram Roughani and Dr. Uma Ramabadran (Physics) have a Valentine’s gift for anyone who owns a diamond. Bring your diamond to 1-905 AB (the Raman Lab, near the International Office) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday, Valentine’s Day, and have the gem’s validity tested using laser spectroscopy. The free examination is non-destructive and will ID the stone as a real diamond. “This is nondestructive testing for the diamond, but maybe not so for the relationship,” joked Dr. Roughani.

I think I'll try this out!

Kettering's Green Mobility Laboratory

Here is some great information to share with your future electrical engineer!

With the auto industry increasingly focused on electric-based vehicles, Kettering University has positioned itself as one of only a few schools in the country preparing students in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) technology from an electrical engineering perspective.

After receiving grant money in 2010 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Kettering has created an HEV Green Mobility Laboratory.

Wage and Benefits Survey

Parents:

By now, you may know that part of your student's educational experience at Kettering University includes a paid co-op experience, designed to allow your son or daughter to put classroom learning to use in a real job setting.  Students typically earn between $40,000 and $65,000 throughout their educational career at Kettering.

Our most recent Co-op Wage and Benefits Survey provides more detail on what Kettering students currently earn.

Think about this: your student will gain REAL job experience in a challenging engineering, science, computer science, mathematics or business field.  The wage that he or she earns is a good salary that can be used to offset tuition and living costs.  Take a look at some of the Kettering University employer partners at:

The Kettering University Advantage!

I am pleased to introduce myself as the new Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Kettering University.  Ever since I first arrived on campus, I have been constantly amazed by the Kettering faculty that I meet...  professors who are not only terrfic teachers and researchers, but who also take tremendous interest in their students. And talk about our students!  As I meet them and listen to their stories, I'm astonished by their personal and professional accomplishments.  Kettering students are thinkers, problem solvers and innovators who are truly excited about their studies and work experiences.

For those of you who are not that familiar with Kettering University, formerly GMI Management & Engineering Institute, the first thing you'll notice upon closer look is that Kettering is very different than most institutions of higher learning.  The hallmark of the Kettering education is the paid co-op experience, required for every student.  This typically begins in the freshman year!  Students work in positions covering a full range of industries that include areas such as automobile, aerospace, banking, metallurgical, and health care.  Students generally earn between $40,000 and $65,000 over the course of their program.  Today there are more than 500 companies employing our students in hundreds of locations around the world.  Biomet, Becton Dickinson, Whirlpool, Spectranetics, and Alcoa are just a few of the powerhouse companies partnering with Kettering.

Kettering offers majors in chemical, computer, electrical, industrial and mechanical engineering, as well as applied mathematics, applied physics, engineering physics, biochemistry, chemistry, business administration, and computer science.  Concentrations and specialties include (but are not limited to) acoustics, applied optics, computer gaming, alternative energy, aerospace engineering, and healthcare system engineering.

Kettering admissions officers are ready and eager to work with high school seniors and transfer students interested in applying for admission.

Contact the Kettering Office of Admissions at (810) 762-7865 for more information or to schedule a campus visit.

Listen to some of our students!
