What is A-Section, what is B-Section?

If you have spent any time researching Kettering University, you probably learned that the paid cooperative education program is one of Kettering's unique features. Every new student, with the help of his or her Kettering co-op manager, will work to secure a paid learning experience with a company. In the coming months, your student will receive more information about this process.

Another element that makes Kettering different from most universities is our academic calendar. Functioning as a year-round system, Kettering has 4 terms of 12 weeks each.  Terms begin in July, October, January and April.  Students switch between their course terms and co-op terms every 12 weeks. Student are assigned to either A-Section or B-Section, meaning that their classes will begin in either the July or October term.

A-Section
July term: start classes at Kettering
October term: co-op experience
January term: classes at Kettering
April term: co-op experience

B-Section
October term: start classes at Kettering
January term: co-op experience
April term: classes at Kettering
July term: co-op experience

(Last year some new B-Section freshmen started at their co-op jobs in July, depending on job location and availability  -- even before they started their classes in October!)

This calendar system is a new concept for many prospective students.  Kettering students will tell you that they get used to moving every 3 months!

Students learn their section assignments at the time of acceptance to Kettering. If students wish to switch sections, they may simply send an email to sectionassignments@kettering.edu.
